Amur Tiger Center: Bear Situation in Primorye is Stable
The bear situation in Russia's Primorye region is stable and does not require additional measures, according to Sergey Aramilev, General Director of the Amur Tiger Center. He noted that the local taiga currently provides enough food for the bears, preventing the emergence of 'shatuns' – bears unable to gain enough fat for hibernation.
Aramilev mentioned that attacks by bears on people and livestock have decreased over the past two years. Alexey Surovy, Deputy Head of the Primorye Forestry Ministry, confirmed that no fatal bear attacks on humans have occurred in the region during this period.
Comparing recent events to past spikes in incidents, such as in 2015 and 2020, Aramilev stated, "The situation in Primorye is stable overall; there are no changes as seen in other regions. Primorye is not a risk zone where anything needs to be globally changed in this regard."
Both Aramilev and Surovy responded negatively when asked by RIA Novosti about introducing payments for bear culling in Primorye. "We don't have that. In Primorye, thanks to competent population management policies, the situation is within normal limits, with no anomalies," Aramilev explained. He added that "attracting an additional army of hunters is not required at this time."
